Prayers for Health Care Worldwide

This month we are praying especially for:

• the study day on health care in the multi-faith/multi-cultural environment, to be held on Thursday 3rd May
• Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil, and our students who are working there
• Concerns about changes in the Health Service in the UK
• Health care in North America, especially the controversy about the health system in the USA

We remember all students and staff in the Department of Care Sciences, especially any who are in particular need today

Loving God, we ask your blessing on doctors and nurses, on all who look after those who are ill, who give friendship to those who are distressed, or sit with those who are near to death.

We ask your guidance for those who are engaged in medical research, that they may persevere with vision and energy; and for those who administer the agencies of health and welfare, that they may have wisdom and compassion.

Loving God, bring healing, bring peace.

Students live on £1 a day at Glamorgan

To many people in the UK, £1 is a nominal amount and can be spent without much thought at all. However for 1.4 billion people around the world, £1 is all they can afford to spend per day.

The number of people who face extreme poverty today equals more than 20 times the population of the UK.

To get a glimpse into everyday life of these people and, more importantly, to try to help them, the UNICEF on Campus team at the University of Glamorgan is taking part in the Live Below the Line campaign.

‘This is our society’s first main campaign and I’m really glad that we are taking part in such a unique initiative to help deprived children around the world.’ – Siddharth Sobti, president of the society.

Along with 20,000 people in the UK, Australia, and the USA who have joined the Global Poverty Project’s initiative this year, each member of the team will spend five days, starting May 7, living on only £1 per day for all food and drink. That means no food donations from other people can be accepted and certainly no fishing in the fridge for previously bought food. Five pounds has to cover all food and drink in those five days.

So how will this help the children? That’s up to you! Sponsor the team members and your donation will go straight to UNICEF, the leading children’s organization that brings direct help to poor children and their families in more than 150 countries around the world.

To find out more and to sponsor the team please visit facebook.com/glamlbl or ask at the Meeting House on the Treforest Campus.

A World of Faith at the Meeting House

A diverse group of students met at the Meeting House on Monday evenings through March. After a presentation by Associate Chaplain Ray Vincent on “What is Christianity?” the group sat down for a meal, and over the table there was a lively discussion not just about Christianity but about religion in general.

The group were of at least seven different nationalities, and included all different types of Christians, Muslims, Hindus and one or two professed unbelievers. It was as if the whole world had gathered in one room, except that it was a peaceful world. The discussion was serious, passionate, honest and fun.

We all had an opportunity to express our own faith (and to question it) and to learn about other people’s faith. This was the Chaplaincy building truly being a Meeting House. Those who came are determined to meet again, and we hope to host many more such evenings in the future. Any suggestions for topics are welcome.

Anyone who wants to be kept in touch with future events should follow the Chaplaincy Channel, join the Meeting House Group on Facebook, or contact us.

The Meeting House – a place of welcome for staff

Have you visited the Meeting House yet?

Since October 2011, the Meeting House has been open for you on the Treforest campus, just above the Ferndale Building at the Brook Street gate. Our lounge is accessible 9 am – 5 pm every weekday with tea and coffee always available.  Take the opportunity to spend your work-break in comfortable surroundings – and why not bring a colleague or two?

The Meeting House is an oasis free of teaching and administrative work, and is a warm and welcoming place. The building is home to the University’s Chaplaincy Services, but you don’t have to be religious to drop in. All are welcome, and no-one will expect you to sign up for any religious belief or activity. But you might well meet other staff members or students who have a religious point of view, and who would be fascinated to know what you think, too.

So whether you are looking for a quiet place for a cuppa, a room to book for a social or cultural meeting, or even a place for prayer, the Meeting House has something to offer you. It’s open every working day and can be made available for evening events with enough advance notice. Drop in soon and meet the Meeting House for yourself!

The University’s Chaplains are available to any member of staff across the Glamorgan Group  for confidential pastoral support, and there is usually one on duty at the Meeting House. We can also arrange to meet you at mutually convenient place.

The Meeting House – a place of welcome for students

Have you visited the Meeting House yet?

Since October 2011, the Meeting House has been open for you on the Treforest campus, just above the Ferndale Building at the Brook Street gate. Our lounge is accessible 9 am - 5 pm every weekday with tea and coffee always available.  Bring your friends – or come to find some new ones!

The Meeting House is home to the University’s Chaplaincy Services, but you don’t have to be religious to drop in. All are welcome, and no-one will expect you to sign up for any religious belief or activity. But you might well meet other students who have a religious point of view, and who would be fascinated to know what you think, too.

Student groups also make good use of the building, including some business students who used the Lounge as a venue to promote Fairtrade (photos available!), and international students from Mexico, Nigeria and China who made good use of the meeting hall to show off the sights and tastes of their native lands (view on Facebook).

The Meeting House Group is an informal network of students who use the Meeting House as a base for sharing perspectives on faith and on ethical issues. In recent months, they have worked to give UNICEF a presence on campus and collected for the Pontypridd Foodbank. You can network with the Meeting House Group on Facebook or drop in to the Meeting House and introduce yourself.

So whether you are looking for a quiet place for a cuppa, a room to book for a social or cultural meeting, or even a place for prayer, the Meeting House has something to offer you. It’s open every working day, even outside undergraduate term times, and can be made available for evening events with enough advance notice. Drop in soon and meet the Meeting House for yourself!

“WHAT IS CHRISTIANITY?” – a course, MARCH 2012

This is an introduction to Christianity suitable for:

  • Christians wanting to explore their faith further
  • others interested in finding out more about Christianity

We will not tell you what to believe. The course will attempt to:

  • acquaint you with the basic facts: the story of Jesus, how Christianity began, how it has grown and developed, what it looks like today as a world faith
  • explore the issues of belief. Christians express their faith in many different ways. They interpret the traditional statements of faith on different levels (literal, symbolic, metaphorical), and they disagree on many issues. The aim in this course is to open up and discuss issues, not to impose our own particular beliefs

The course is in four sessions:

1. What is Christianity? The history and geography; the main Christian churches and traditions; a general overview of Christianity today as a world faith.

2. Jesus: his story, his teaching, what Christians believe about him, how we interpret the meaning of his death and resurrection.

3. The Bible: a general introduction to its history and content; the different views about its authority and how to interpret it.

4. Why Christianity?  What is it about Christianity that makes it different from other faiths? Does it matter? How do Christians relate to people of other faiths?

The course will be held on Mondays March 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th from 5.30 to 7.00 pm at the Meeting House.

In each session there will be a brief input, then we shall have some soup and rolls (free) and discuss of the issues that have been raised.

Please register to come by e-mailing chaplaincy@glam.ac.uk , phoning (01443 65)4060, or calling in at the Meeting House.

Business students promote Fairtrade at Meeting House

Four Glamorgan business students held a lunch-time “try and buy” session to promote Fairtrade at the Meeting House on Tuesday, 31st January.

The many staff, students and people from the local community who called in were offered free samples of Fairtrade tea, coffee and biscuits. Also on offer were stalls with Fairtrade food, clothing, and crafts to browse or buy, and a Fairtrade film on display screens. There was a brief presentation by a specially-invited representative of Fairtrade Wales.

As well as being informative, it was a fun event with a festive atmosphere, a buzz of conversation, and students dressed as bananas walking around the campus to invite people in. There was a quiz, and a prize draw for a hamper of Fairtrade goods.
The event was organised by a group of students from the Faculty of Business and Society – Yuanna Hong, Zhe Wu, Hao Shen and Arwa Al-Twal – in partnership with the Chaplaincy.
The University of Glamorgan has been a Fairtrade University since 2007.
